Do you want to build a scarecrow?

I don’t think I have said it enough…I love the fall!  So many fun things to do.  Today we will build a scarecrow!  Do you want to build a scarecrow?  This free fall activity is free and fun and it will challenge a child’s fine motor and cutting skills.  It is super cute if you glue to a Popsicle stick – but cutting and pasting even on paper is adorable .  Regardless, this may also be a super difficult activity for little ones.  You may want to have them color and cut out some of the easier pieces or parts.   Definitely don’t frustrate the little ones!  Here is some help on how to teach a child how to hold scissors.  If you are looking for some good books to talk about scarecrows, there is The Little Old Lady who was not afraid of anything.  This is a great book that builds suspense and wonder and a bit of fright….  My kids love the book , though!  Another great book is  The Scarecrow’s Hat.    In The Scarecrow’s hat, A resourceful chicken seeks the help of her farm animal friends to solve a problem, while giving something of herself along the way. Chicken really admires Scarecrow’s hat. Scarecrow would gladly trade his hat for a walking stick to rest his tired arms. Chicken doesn’t have a walking stick to trade —but she knows someone who does. Thus begins her quest to find items to trade among her farm friends, all to obtain a walking stick to swap for Scarecrow’s hat. But why does Chicken want an old straw hat? This is a captivating story that makes you want to keep turning the pages to see if Chicken is able to get Scarecrow’s hat.

Madreen Karle is a master first grade reading teacher with over 30 years of classroom experience. She taught reading in a special needs and English as a Second Language classroom. After retiring she wrote a reading program to help others learn how to teach reading. She is a trusted educator and author of 5 books to help teach children to read and write. In addition to her books, she is a mentor for 3 websites that give reading teacher tips (Mrs. Karle’s Sight and Sound ReadingMrs. Karle’s Reading Patch, and Mrs. Karle’s Handwriting Patch). Through her teaching she learned that confidence was the key to learning to read. A child who is not confident at reading does not like to read and struggles to read. Mrs. Karle created “sunshine moments” to help teach children how to grow their confidence and learn to read.
Meeghan Karle Mousaw (Madreen’s daughter) has her Master’s in Special Education. She has 8 years experience teaching children to read online. In addition, she developed a curriculum to teach children handwriting called The Handwriting Patch. With the Handwriting Patch learning is fun because children learn to draw and learn handwriting at the same time. In 2019 The Handwriting Patch curriculum became an amazon best seller the first year it was released, helping thousands of kids learn handwriting with a unique, fun method. She is mom to 6 kids, each with differently learning abilities and struggles.
The Reading Patch was established by the creators of Mrs. Karle’s Sight and Sound Reading. Together they have been featured on the NBC media outlets and Parents Magazine online. Over the last 8 years in their online platform, Madreen and Meeghan have worked tirelessly with teachers, homeschoolers and parents looking to help children learn to read to become a trusted authority in teaching children to read and advocating early literacy skills. They often partner with other educational experts to deliver the most current information to the Reading Patch community.

Hi Meeghan. I teach at a multi-level rural school (literally a one-room schoolhouse!). I will use this as a fall activity for art and the older kids can help the younger with the harder cutting. But I will also use it (maybe enlarged slightly, cut out and laminated) as part of a hangman set – rather than hanging a man, they can assemble a scarecrow! I was going to make one up myself, but you saved me HOURS! Thank you.

      1. Oh my, that is such an adorable idea! I am so glad you will put them to good use! I was hesitant to post because it is really a hard activity for kindergarten. At the same time, I was super excited because I thought it was fun and adorable. I am glad you found the perfect use for them!

    2. Love this! Thank you for sharing. I’m going to give each piece a number and when my preschooler’s roll a number they can get the piece that has the number they rolled.

      1. Great idea! Thanks for sharing a great way to modify it to help the little ones participate in building the scarecrow!
