From Head to Toe Worksheets and Activities
One of my favorite books to read to children is From Head to Toe by Eric Carle. In the book, children read animal movements and then try them out for themselves. The book is simple, repetitive, interactive and fun for children as they listen and act out the different animals. One of the many reasons I love the book is because it is so easy to modify for difficult subjects and ability levels. Today I have FREE From Head to Toe Worksheets and Activities for Kindergarten for you to do to go along with this book!
In the book, Eric Carle writes, “I am a penguin and I turn my head. Can you do it? I can do it!” Children then turn their head like a penguin and say, “I can do it!” It is super fun and cute to watch the children act out the book…and, well – I just like to be a little goofy acting out the book as well. It is one of those books that the children will ask over and over and over and over AGAIN for you to read it. The book is so cute, I never get annoyed by reading it over and over and over again.
From Head to Toe Board BookDe la cabeza a los pies (From Head to Toe, Spanish Edition)
I created an entire packet of fun activities to do with this book. These Eric Carle (inspired) lesson plans contain over 20 pages of activities and things to do to go along with the book! There are activities for language arts, math, art, science, Spanish and even religion! Click the yellow arrow or link below to see more details and to download your free worksheet pack!
For Language Arts (and Art!)
For Language Arts, you can have children create their own story, or just “copy” the original From Head to Toe. Children can draw their own pictures and make up their own words. Additionally, we have our own story we created called “Monkey See, Monkey Do!” I include a copy of this sight word book within the Eric Carle (inspired) Frem Head to Toe Worksheets and Activities packet. You can read our version of the book together and then have the students create their own story.
From Head to Toe Worksheets and Activities inspired by Eric Carle’s book

There are three worksheets for math. First, we count and write out the number of animals in the book. For the second worksheet we count the number of legs on each animal. If the child is able, you can have the child add all the legs of all the animals. For the last worksheet, if the student is able, we have a worksheet where the student can do each activity 10 times, counting up to 120 (for the 12 animals).
For Science, you can teach the children the difference between wild and tame animals. Students can then decide if each animal in the story is wild or tame. The students can pick an animal to study and then draw a picture of the animal and write 3 facts about the animal. There is a cut/paste wild and tame activity to place the animals in their homes.
We also create the worksheets in Spanish. I love that you can also read this book in Spanish. My first and third grader are learning Spanish right now. While they still love this book, it is great to be able to challenge them by reading it to them in Spanish. The Spanichs book is called: De la cabeza a los pies (From Head to Toe, Spanish Edition). So, the students can make their own Spanish book and do many of the worksheets in Spanish. It was a great way to learn the animal names in Spanish. AND….did you know that Animals speak Spanish too? Yes, that is right, you can teach the children how the animals speak/sound in Spanish!
I am a big fan of the Noah’s ark story. I actually have a collection of Noah’s Ark wooden animals! For the Eric Carle (inspired) Lesson Plans, you can read the story of Noah and his ark, then I have worksheets where students can cut and paste the animals to help them go onto the Ark. There are also some Noah’s ark discussion questions.

Madreen Karle is a master first grade reading teacher with over 30 years of classroom experience. She taught reading in a special needs and English as a Second Language classroom. After retiring she wrote a reading program to help others learn how to teach reading. She is a trusted educator and author of 5 books to help teach children to read and write. In addition to her books, she is a mentor for 3 websites that give reading teacher tips (Mrs. Karle’s Sight and Sound Reading, Mrs. Karle’s Reading Patch, and Mrs. Karle’s Handwriting Patch). Through her teaching she learned that confidence was the key to learning to read. A child who is not confident at reading does not like to read and struggles to read. Mrs. Karle created “sunshine moments” to help teach children how to grow their confidence and learn to read.
Meeghan Karle Mousaw (Madreen’s daughter) has her Master’s in Special Education. She has 8 years experience teaching children to read online. In addition, she developed a curriculum to teach children handwriting called The Handwriting Patch. With the Handwriting Patch learning is fun because children learn to draw and learn handwriting at the same time. In 2019 The Handwriting Patch curriculum became an amazon best seller the first year it was released, helping thousands of kids learn handwriting with a unique, fun method. She is mom to 6 kids, each with differently learning abilities and struggles.
The Reading Patch was established by the creators of Mrs. Karle’s Sight and Sound Reading. Together they have been featured on the NBC media outlets and Parents Magazine online. Over the last 8 years in their online platform, Madreen and Meeghan have worked tirelessly with teachers, homeschoolers and parents looking to help children learn to read to become a trusted authority in teaching children to read and advocating early literacy skills. They often partner with other educational experts to deliver the most current information to the Reading Patch community.

Sorry you were having trouble getting the From Head to Toe worksheets. To get them, you enter your name/email into the blue box. I will do that for you now. Please check your spam box…. To get the freebie you need to enter your name/email into the form and then it will be auto-mailed to you. I will do this for you now. If you don’t find the freebie, check your spam folder…sometimes things go there. The freebie has a subject of “Here is your free download!” …Inside that email there is a link. That link, if you click on it, the download will either popup in a new tab or download into your download folder. Sometimes that link does not come hyperlinked. If that happens you have to copy/paste the link into a new browser tab and it will then open for you. If you have trouble with this, though, you can forward me the email/replay to the freebie email you received and I will be happy to help you with it. In either case… if you can’t find the email I am talking about -let me know and I will get it to you.
Please send activities to go with Head to Toe
