Learn to read free: Day 1

Learn to read free! Day 1 of a 120 day video series -explicit teaching with free worksheets included!

Welcome to Day 1 of Mrs. Karle’s Sight and Sound Reading, learn to read free program! We offer free online video for kindergarten or preschool children to learn to read free. To get started, watch the video below and print out the worksheet. Have your child follow along each day. Mrs. Karle will tell you exactly what to do.  If you prefer to teach your child yourself, we offer  a Teaching Reading Book (either digital or in print from amazon).  If you don’t want to print out the page each day,  we have a workbook on amazon – (in color or in black/white).   Regardless, though, please take a minute to read through this page to learn how we suggest for how to follow through with this program.    We suggest starting with our sight word reading program (that is this page, Day 1!) , and then around Day 15, adding in some phonics videos from our phonics reading program, and then around day 25, building fluency (speed and accuracy) by starting our word ladder/word family videos.  If you want complete, easy access, to everything we offer, check out our premium membership.   It has anything and everything you could ever need or want to help you teach your child to read.  For daily reminders about following along with our program, fill out the info on this online reading program page.  Lastly, please feel free to write me if you have any questions about your little reader: [email protected]

Madreen Karle is a master first grade reading teacher with over 30 years of classroom experience. She taught reading in a special needs and English as a Second Language classroom. After retiring she wrote a reading program to help others learn how to teach reading. She is a trusted educator and author of 5 books to help teach children to read and write. In addition to her books, she is a mentor for 3 websites that give reading teacher tips (Mrs. Karle’s Sight and Sound ReadingMrs. Karle’s Reading Patch, and Mrs. Karle’s Handwriting Patch). Through her teaching she learned that confidence was the key to learning to read. A child who is not confident at reading does not like to read and struggles to read. Mrs. Karle created “sunshine moments” to help teach children how to grow their confidence and learn to read.
Meeghan Karle Mousaw (Madreen’s daughter) has her Master’s in Special Education. She has 8 years experience teaching children to read online. In addition, she developed a curriculum to teach children handwriting called The Handwriting Patch. With the Handwriting Patch learning is fun because children learn to draw and learn handwriting at the same time. In 2019 The Handwriting Patch curriculum became an amazon best seller the first year it was released, helping thousands of kids learn handwriting with a unique, fun method. She is mom to 6 kids, each with differently learning abilities and struggles.
The Reading Patch was established by the creators of Mrs. Karle’s Sight and Sound Reading. Together they have been featured on the NBC media outlets and Parents Magazine online. Over the last 8 years in their online platform, Madreen and Meeghan have worked tirelessly with teachers, homeschoolers and parents looking to help children learn to read to become a trusted authority in teaching children to read and advocating early literacy skills. They often partner with other educational experts to deliver the most current information to the Reading Patch community.

      1. What I find so initresteng is you could never find this anywhere else.

  1. Thank you for the free resources. I’m working on sight words with my daughter. Thank you for linking up with Countdown in Style.

    1. So glad you joined us! Hope you give our program a try with your daughter -it is a great way to learn the sight words in context. Students remember the words better when they see that the sight words have meaning. Best of luck and let us know if you have any questions!

  2. I’ve never heard of this concept. Immediately I’m wondering what age group does this start with. My son is fairly young but I’ve seen programs like “your baby can read” so I wasn’t sure 🙂 Thanks for sharing this free item with us at Countdown in Style! Don’t forget to stop by Friday to see if you are featured 🙂

    1. Thanks for stopping by!! In terms of the best age to start… we have a free reading readiness test that will help you determine when is best to start with your child. Typically you would start somewhere between 4 and 6, when your child is starting to recognize letters, and noticing words. I started with my three year old last summer..and he could do day 1 and 2, but then when we got to three, you could tell he would need a lot of practice before moving on. SO, we just took a break. When children are ready, they will learn quickly and easily…their brain will just be ready for it. Our program is different from “My baby can read” because we teach the sight words in context. (We also are teaching sight words, not simple nouns that a baby might see around the home). Eighty percent of words that children read are sight words- words that cannot be sounded out. IF the students know these words, they will succeed 80% of the time! The children in our learn the words in the context of a sentence, which enhances learning and understanding of the text. Also, we believe children will learn quickly and easily when their brain is ready to learn. There is no need to sit in front of a TV for a long time looking at the same word over and over. Anyway, thanks for stopping by! I will definitely be back to Countdown in Style in the future!

  3. I love this! I’m going to have to start his with my four year old. Thanks so much for sharing!

  4. Happy SITS Day! I dont have kids, but this seems like an excellent resource. I’ll be sure to send my mom friends your way!

  5. What an amazing thing to give back! It’s great to see people like you on the internet, and giving the gift of learning to read is incredible!

    1. Thank you! As Mrs. Karle says…it is a “labor of love”. We love helping others learn to read. Teach someone to read and they will learn for a lifetime.

  6. Happy SITS Day! What an awesome site you have 🙂

  7. Kim Smith says:

Great video. She has a pleasant voice for a child to listen to. I will need to investigate further for my third grade student who is struggling. Thanks.

    1. Thanks! I think we probably can help your struggling third grader. Feel free to email me and I am happy to help with specific concerns. We offer a free reading readiness test and free sight word test. Test your third grader using the sight word test and see if he/she can read the words instantaneously. At the point where he/she struggles, start our program at that point. If you find that they know the sight words, then work on the phonics videos that we offer. They may seem basic to a third grader but a little bit of extra practice will go a long way and give them the confidence they need.

I am homeschooling my kindergarten granddaughter. Mrs. Karle’s Sight and Sound Reading program is wonderful. We are on Day 50, and it is amazing what she has learned already. Thank you so much for this great program. It is just what I needed to get my granddaughter started on a solid foundation.

    1. Oh my goodness, thank you so much for the wonderful comment! We are thrilled you are doing so well with the program! So glad you are on day 50! By the time she finishes (Day 120), your granddaughter will be reading at a 2nd grade level! Please let us know if you have any questions along the way… thank you, again, for leaving a comment!

I teach a preschool special education class. I have a child who just turned 5. He is autistic. He was completely nonverbal less than 2 years ago when I got him. He did not eat food at all. He had no means of communication. Now here we are almost 2 years later and he recognizes all upper and lower case letters of the alphabet and can put them in alphabetical order. He can count to 30 and put numbers in numerical order. He eats almost everything we give him. He still does not communicate very effectively but we are working on that. He still has meltdowns but not nearly as often and he is not toilet trained. I know he would not be successful in the regular program yet. I will keep him one more year and my goal is to have him reading before he leaves me (among other goals!). This program looks like just what I need for my little friend. I am looking forward to starting it with him. I had planned on starting with sight words then move into phonics, which is exactly what your program does. I can’t wait till August now!!

    1. Aww, yay! I am so glad you found us! Please let us know if we can help in any way! We hear from a lot of teachers and parents with children with autism and how it really helped them learn to read… I know your little friend will enjoy learning from Mrs. Karle (or you!…using her program!)… Thanks for leaving a nice note!
